A defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the possible threats associated with Chinese-made vehicles, and personnel have been told to refrain from discussing classified matters in any cars.
Safety Advice for Defence Staff
In a recent appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to discuss classified material while travelling in Chinese cars.
He stated that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, however stressed that security is a issue in all contemporary cars.
We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their car, not to have discussions at a secret level in any car, due to the increasing threats of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Defence Context
This revelation comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel has been shining lasers at RAF aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.
The wider defence situation underscores the significance of robust protocols and caution in all aspects of official activities, from transport usage to discussions practices.
