They're Doing to America What They Did with Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and characteristic instances – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of several weeks, the American president began displaying everyone his designs for a lavish reception room two times larger than the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the eastern section to erect it.

He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of fatalities due to his slashing to USAID stands at 600,000 and growing, and presently an analysis forecast his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have risked – truly, no previous leader would have imagined – unilaterally destroying major areas of the executive mansion in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, the majority of whom maintain dealings with the government.

We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the world' toward 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'

As bewildering as it is to witness the president try to upend the established notion about democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment within America who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics a near majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have watched over the years as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we learned about into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Essentially, they turned a figure of compassion into an icon of hate who approves specifically the brutality that he denounced in biblical teachings; this change developed more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.

A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold

Hence I shall explain the Savior from my childhood, as conceptually the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the fastest-growing cadre within America might have little sense regarding him since they are non-believers or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that there are pearls of great price within Christian narrative.

It is decidedly not the account of an authoritative monarch emerging; conversely, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to evade undercover officers. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his doctrine concerns compassion for other people, particularly for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Christ's response to aggression is to offer the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a way to teach the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing is that if a person pilfers your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing also.

The apparent and clear fact that the Jesus from scripture requests a form of profound affection centered on the poor has consistently rendered the Christian faith something of a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but owing to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be restrained. During the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so prevalent that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.

A Battle for the Best Within Us

Therefore I have felt encouraged to witness the determined opposition to Trump develop in this past year. It has been great solace to participate in developing the campaign that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired citizens to participate in significant amounts during minor elections. We must have to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags at every demonstration and requests to the best parts of American history.

We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you welcome them and receive them or not?

America is best defended, to put it differently, by relationship to the best in US heritage, just as Christianity is most protected by reference to that which renders it distinctive and beautiful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In neither case does it suggest pretending the worst regarding America and religious tradition never occurred; it represents both meekness and faith, a mixture that committed national faithful ought to accept.
