This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but within Together lies a intense contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He fears the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.
